They usually provide the most efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens because they use less energy. They can also be used to cook food and warm dishes. This eliminates the requirement for other appliances, such as toasters or warming plates.

DOE conducts a variety of analyses when evaluating potential amendments to energy conservation standards. These include assessments of technology and market screening analysis, engineering analyses and a national impact analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its current engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the highest efficiency improvements that are technically feasible for this product category.

DOE will compare the design of a microwave to an energy performance objective that is specified in the engineering analysis. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of NIA, DOE will assess the effects on consumers, including cost savings throughout the lifecycle and simple payback period (PBP). DOE will use the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens, to calculate the industry's net present value (NPV).

The impact of manufacturers will be assessed as well and DOE will use a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted for this type of product to calculate the manufacturing NPV. DOE will also consider the impacts of these plans on small businesses as well as other subgroups of manufacturers to identify those who are likely to be affected.

DOE will also examine whether the test procedure for microwave ovens needs to be revised to include active mode power consumption as well as a possible integrated energy use measure. Currently, the test procedures only deal with standby mode power use.

Design

Wall ovens are based on evenly circulating hot air while microwaves use waves to cause water molecules in food items to vibrate and produce heat. Combination wall ovens combine these two different appliances into one unit that can be used to save kitchen space and gives sleek, modern design. However, you must carefully take into consideration your budget and goals before investing in a combo wall oven. Some of the combo ovens we evaluated have design or performance issues.
